The Known World Commedia Symposium will be held May 28-31 in the Barony-Marche of the Debatable Lands, Kingdom of Æthelmearc. The site is LaRoche University, 9000 Babcock Blvd., Pittsburgh, PA 15237. The event will focus on classes about and performances of 16th Century Commedia dell’Arte shows, including topics like working with sources from history, how to create a script, stage combat, blocking, character development, and vocal projection. There will also be other activities related to 16th Century Italy, including rapier classes from Italian manuals, dancing, Venetian costuming, cooking, and scribal classes.

In addition, join us for tours of the famed castle built and owned by Duke Byron of Haverford and Duchess Sir Ariella of Thornbury on Friday evening at 7pm and Monday morning at 11am. The castle, located 20 minutes from the university, is based on 14th c. Bodiam Castle in East Sussex, England. The site is fully handicapped accessible. Service animals are welcome. Emotional support animals and pets are not allowed. Alcohol is permitted in the Campus Center and the dormitories.

The Adult Event Registration is $35. Adult Member Discount Event Registration is $25. Minors through age 17 are free.

Meals must be reserved separately in advance. Continental Buffet Breakfast will be available at the dormitory Saturday through Monday. Lunch and Dinner are provided in the University Dining Hall on Saturday and Sunday. All meal reservations must be made no later than May 7, 2027. Pricing is shown below.

College dorm rooms are available at $40/person/night plus an optional one-time fee of $60 for linens (bedding and towels). Each dorm room has two beds and an en suite bathroom. The dormitory also has a kitchenette and a large lounge available to guests. Reservations must be made at least 48 hours in advance.

There are also two hotels, Fairfield Inn and Suites, and Home 2 Suites by Hilton, within walking distance of the campus at McCandless Crossing.
