SUMMARY:Japanese Iris Festival and Baronial Equestrian Champs
DESCRIPTION:Royal Progress: \n \nAdditional notes on Wheelchair Accessibility: There are handicap accessible restrooms.\nAdditional Notes on Alcohol Policy: Alcohol permitted\, but not glass allowed\nAdditional Notes on Pet Policy: All dogs must be on leash at all times.\nAdditional Notes on Flames: There are grills at the site and only flames must be in grills or propane stoves \nIn less than 3 months the Barony Marche of the Debatable Lands will host its second Japanese Iris Festival. “What is that?” you may ask. In Japan it is also called Tango no Sekku or Ayame no hi and was one of the five festival held at the Japanese imperial court. Originally it was on the fifth day of the fifth month or moon in the Chinese lunar calendar. When Japan switched to the Gregorian calendar the date was set to May 5th. Our festival is in early June due to the busy May calendar. Other countries in Asia have a similar festival on the same day. The festival marks the beginning of summer rainy season. Formerly the festival was known as Boys’ Day and the corresponding Girls’ Day was March 3th. After World War II\, the two holidays were combined to be Children’s Day and was renamed to Kodomo no Hi. You will typically see carp-shaped banner displayed\, one for each child. Treats that are traditional on this day are rice cakes called mochi rapped in oak leaves called kashiwa. The kashiwa-mochi are filled with red bean paste. Another traditional treat is chimaki\, which is a sweet rice paste wrapped in an iris or bamboo leaf. \nOur festival will include demonstrations and classes of various Japanese arts and skills. The demonstrations and classes include taiko drumming\, shibori make-and-take gift cloths\, kumihimo\, and tea ceremony. All are welcome to come watch and learn. If you would like to teach a class\, especially about Japanese things or run a demo\, use the following link to sign-up and provide information about your class. https://forms.gle/5Bnmw25aygpWDCtw6. If you have questions about teaching or running a demo\, please contact the class coordinator Gwendolyn the Graceful\, gwenlygrace@gmail.com. An event schedule and class schedule will be posted closer to the event. \nThe traditional festival name Tango no Sekku has meaning in Japanese. Tan means beginning and go is the simified character for horse. Horse is the Chinese zodiac sign for the fifth month. Sekku means festival. So the basic translation would be first day of horse month festival. But in Japanese go is the word for five so the double meaning of go means it’s the fifth day of the horse month. Well then\, horses are the perfect addition to the Iris festival. We will be holding a the Baronial Equestrian Champs for the riders and the horses. This will include the garb potion of the competition. Riders are encouraged to assemble an apppropriate medieval Japanese equestrian outfit. In addition to the Baronial Equestrian Champs\, there will be a number of games. Come watch the horsing around. There will also be a joust\, weather permitting. Equestrians must contact THLady Gesa von Wellenstein at gwellenstein@yahoo.com or by phone at (724) 991-0917 to discuss equine logistics. \nThe event will be held on Saturday\, June 10th\, from 9 am to 7 pm at the Horse Arena at Bradys Run Park\, 121 Bradys Run Road\, Beaver Falls\, PA\, 15010. DESCRIPTION:Royal Progress:    \n \nIt is January 6\, 1066. Edward the Confessor\, The King of England since 1042\, has just died. AND HE HAS NO HEIR. Duke William of Normandy has sworn that Edward promised the crown to him\, as Edward had spent most of his childhood in Normandy in exile from Cnut\, the Viking king who defeated his father and married his mother. However\, in Edward’s last moments\, he gave his blessing to the Witan (English councilmen to the king\, literally “wise men”) to select Harold Godwinson\, Earl of Wessex\, as the new King of England. \nMeanwhile\, Tostig Godwinson\, deposed Earl of Northumbria and brother of Harold\, has sworn revenge on his brother for being the one who deposed him for levying high taxes on his people. Tostig traveled to Norway and struck an alliance with King Harald Hardrada\, whom he convinced to invade England to once again rule as a Viking king and restore Tostig as the Earl of Northumbria. \nThis would set in motion events that would change our world forever. England would have a new society unlike which it has never seen before. The Viking Era in England\, which began in 793 C.E. at a raid of the Lindisfarne Abbey\, would come to an abrupt and bloody end. Englishmen who were once considered freemen would find themselves subjugated to their new Norman overlords. The language you are currently reading would not look the way that it does if 1066 ended differently. \nAt this year’s St. Swithin’s Bog Three Day Event\, we will celebrate this monumental year with Heavy Weapons\, Rapier\, Youth Fighting\, Thrown Weapons and Archery\, many of which will have a Saxon/Viking/Norman flavor! The heavy weapon fighting will use the three major battles in that year (The Battle of Fulford\, the Battle of Stamford Bridge\, and the Battle of Hastings) as inspiration for the scenarios. The Battle of Stamford Bridge (famous for the lone Viking who defended a bridge against dozens of Saxons) will be our feature tournament\, where the bravest of warriors will have their chance to see how long they can last on the bridge against the other fighters! Fighters are encouraged but not required to use Conquest-era weapons and armor. The archery field will include special targets with a Norman and Saxon theme. \nThe feast will be made with mostly period materials\, but will be sure not to disappoint our modern palettes! The hall will be adorned with images of The Bayeux Tapestry\, a Norman work of art that depicts the invasion and defeat of Harold from William’s perspective. Historical poster boards will be displayed in the hall as well\, to provide basic information on what life was like in England in 1066. The theme for the Iron Scribe will follow the event theme\, so better brush up on your early medieval history! Brewers will be encouraged to brew typical libations of the era\, including mead and ale. \nLOCATION:\nOur site is the New Germany Grove Hall\, 1635 New Germany Road\, Summerhill\, PA 15958. Site will open on Friday\, July 12th at 5:00pm and close Sunday\, July 14th at 12:00pm. There is space for camping. SUMMARY:Blackstone Annual Muster & Feast
DESCRIPTION:Additional notes on Wheelchair Accessibility: Grassy Areas\, Handicap Portocastle\, small incline but overall very manageable access.\nAdditional Notes on Alcohol Policy: Effort should be made to use period containers and dispose of alcoholic beverage trash discreetly.\nAdditional Notes on Pet Policy: Pets must be leashed and cleaned up after there are available pet stations. Boons will be granted for the service of bringing a newcomer to share in our pastime. Sparking a flame of love for the modern medieval ages we have created in our Society.\nTournaments of all disciplines will display our prowess with martial activities and creative assets in our great Barony. \nThe public will be invited to view the proceeding from designated areas and possibly tour as staff are able and willing to with the idea of inspiring interest to encourage future participation. \nThere will be raffle prizes as bounty for recruitment. Entry to win is bought by having a newcomer list a member as a referral to the event. The member with the most recruits will be granted an exclusive baronial accolade to be handed down in the following year as an ongoing tradition for the event. \nWe hope to enact a process of better acclimating newcomers and encourage participation within our communities. \nRavenswood is centrally located in our barony between Charleston\, Parkersburg\, and Point Pleasant which are our largest dense populations.
