Welcome to our Kingdom!
A Missive from Their Royal Majesties of Æthelmearc:
Unto all those who read these words, do We, Maynard and Liadain, King and Queen of Sylvan Æthelmearc, sendsun filled Spring greetings and fond wishes this day.
We pen this missive one year after the Crowns were first placed upon Our brow. For all that has seemingly NOT occurred – much has been achieved during this past year. We have grown stronger as individuals, a Kingdomand the SCA under the weight of adversity and challenges hurled before us. We have transformed thelandscape of our Scadian experience out of necessity and while we excitedly anticipate returning to in person events, we appreciate the blessings that have emerged during this crisis that are certain to make our future
Scadian experiences all the richer.
As you may be aware, the SCA Board of Directors (BoD) has issued a resolution to remove the suspension ofin person activity in the SCA effective June 1, 2021. Æthelmearc is blessed with tremendous leadership with keen insight, applicable experience and deep love for our people and Realm. This combined with everyone’s willingness to work together for the best outcome assures the safe, successful reopening of Æthelmearc. We are eager to see each other at events again, however, it is critical that we start small, play smart and scale up with each successful gathering as a building block upon the next. We are turning that dimmer switch up very, very slowly. As Our Kingdom Seneschal, Master Illadore, announced in April, Æthelmearc is currently
permitting small local gatherings and is planning on allowing events beginning June 1st that follow the BoDs resolution – however – fighting and fencing will not be permitted until at least June 1st. As we move forward, Our Kingdom leadership will continue to monitor and evaluate the many factors affecting the health and safety of Our Sylvan lands and populace, providing detailed, clear communication as updates become available. Please know that although events once events are officially permitted, there is no pressure on groups or individuals to actually host formal events in the near future. We encourage Our Shires, Cantons and Baronies to
take reopening slow. Plan a small local outdoor gathering to reconnect with Scadian friends and family – then measure next steps upon the success and comfort of each experience.
We, along with Our Kingdom Officers, remain available to you as a resource and encourage you to contact Us at any time to share your thoughts, questions, or concerns. We know the prospect of reopening in any capacity is daunting and presents serious challenges and apprehensions for many. We stand with you and for you. We continue to be so incredibly proud of you Æthelmearc. Every day, We are awe-struck as We witness your perseverance, victories and ingenuity. Thank you for continuing to do the right thing, staying safe, being kind
to one another and ensuring it is always just better in Æthelmearc.
For Æthelmearc, We Remain,
Maynard and Liadain
Rex et Regina Æthelmearc
From the Kingdom Seneschal, Mistress Illadore:
AE Heavy Fighting and Fencing on Pause til June 1st
Posted April 1, 2021
Greetings to Beloved AEthelmearc.
It is time to start discussing re-opening Æthelmearc. I would like to thank everyone who has taken their time to answer my question “what does Æthelmearc re-opening look like for you and your families?” I had many people respond and I am grateful for each letter and discussion.
As many of you saw, the Board of Directors has issued a resolution on re-opening the SCA that has been published in this Æstel. I have also posted our re-opening information previously on social media and via our email announcement list but will reiterate it here:
“I bring news from the Kingdom Financial Committee, which includes myself and Their Majesties, as well as the Deputy Kingdom Seneschal of Pandemics, Duke Christopher; and Master Morien, Kingdom Earl Marshal. As you have seen, the Board of Directors has passed a resolution for Resolution to Lift Suspension of In-Person Activity in the SCA as of June 1st, 2021.
Collectively, we have decided that
A) Æthelmearc will allow events starting June 1st that follow the Board of Director’s resolutions.
B) Fighting and Fencing are still on hold at least until June 1st.
With the spike of infections happening in all three States that make up Æthelmearc, we need some more time to see if we can overcome the virus and see how big the spike is going to be.
We are; however, allowing small gatherings now. (Such as sewing circles, and guild meetings.) They should also fit within the BOD’s guidelines. We recommend small, local gatherings first. Long distance travel is not recommended by the CDC at this time and we suggest folks be mindful of that. If you need a variance for any of the BOD’s resolutions, please contact me and we will work on that together. Regarding events – Æthelmearc is indeed going to allow events starting June 1st that follow the BOD’s guidelines. We recommend small events at first and pre-registration will be required. We are also going to try to get our prepay systems up and running, in an effort to limit contact where possible. Of note, we do not know if we will be allowing fighting at fencing at that time, so please be mindful of that when
planning events for June. I also know you have many questions, such as what about Pennsic, and when is Crown Tourney. We are still working on that now. The answers are to be determined. We’re working on it and as soon as I know, I will let you all know as well.”
Please do feel free to contact me or your local or regional seneschals with any questions.
Resolution to Suspend In-Person SCA Activity (Updated – December 4, 2020):
The Resolution to Suspend In-Person SCA Activity until January 31, 2021, has been updated to May 31, 2021.
December 4, 2020
At the end of July, the Board of Directors issued a proclamation suspending most inperson SCA activities in North America until January 31, 2021, due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. In November, we asked the Kingdom Seneschals and Crowns of the known world to give us their counsel on how to proceed in the first part of 2021. We received very thoughtful responses from nearly all Crowns and Kingdom Seneschals as well as many other concerned people. We wish to thank everyone who responded for taking the time to do so, and for putting such effort into your responses.
After reading and discussing the feedback received, the Board decided at their conference call meeting on 12/01/2020 to continue the suspension of in-person activities in North America through May 31, 2021.
The entire press release is located at https://www.sca.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/2020-12-04-Resolution-Continuation-Letter.pdf.
During the July 28, 2020, Ad Hoc meeting of the Board of Directors for the Society for Creative Anachronism, the following Resolution was passed by a unanimous vote and made effective immediately:
I. Whereas, the COVID-19 Global Pandemic has created an unparalleled challenge for the administration of the Society for Creative Anachronism. The Board of Directors acknowledges the health and well-being of the membership and participants of the SCA are of utmost importance;
II. Whereas, the Crowns of the vast majority of North American Kingdoms have petitioned the board to suspend in-person SCA events in North America until January 31st, 2021;
III. Whereas, following consultation with the Kingdom Seneschals of the North American Kingdoms, it appears that this petition is generally supported;
IV. Therefore Now Be It Resolved, The SCA Board of Directors suspends all SCA in-person events in North America until January 31st, 2021;
V. Resolved, Small local gatherings including, but not limited to, archery practice, guild meetings, officer meetings, and local martial activities shall remain at the discretion of the Crown and Kingdom Seneschal, in accordance with CDC, State, Provincial, and local health guidelines and
recommendations. Virtual events as alternatives continue to be a viable option;
VI. Resolved, The SCA Board of Directors directs the Society Seneschal to grant a blanket variance to Corpora waiving any required events such as Crown List and Coronation until January 31st, 2021, as well as extending all current reigns until a royal list can be held to determine suitable Heirs;
VII. Resolved, If a Crown or Coronet steps down without Heirs for a Kingdom or Principality, a Regent shall be installed until such time as a royal list may be held to find suitable Heirs and a Coronation or Investiture held. This regent should be installed according to the Kingdom or Principality laws that govern the appointment of Regents, after consultation with the Society Seneschal. If the Kingdom or Principality has no such law, the Kingdom Seneschal (and Principality Seneschal when appropriate) must consult with the Society Seneschal and Society President to determine an appropriate selection method for a Regent;
VIII. Resolved, the SCA Board of Directors invites Kingdoms who have determined that it is safe to host in-person events before January 31st, 2021, to request a variance from the Society Seneschal to be able to do so. The Society Seneschal shall have the authority to grant or deny these requests. These requests will be reviewed by the Board using the same review method used for variances to Corpora;
IX. Resolved, the SCA Board of Directors commends the officers, royalty, hard-working membership, and participants who have made it possible for the SCA to continue activities during these trying times.
Resolution to Lift Suspension of In-Person Activity in the SCA as of June 1st, 2021

III. Whereas the SCA Board of Directors continues to prioritize the health and well-being of the membership and participants of the SCA; and
IV. Whereas the directed suspension of in-person events in North America expires after May 31st, 2021; now, therefore, be it

A. Masks that fully cover the mouth and nose must be worn by all attendees over the age of 4 at all times and during all activities except for eating and drinking;
B. Court, bardic circles, or any activity that involves voice projection shall also require that masks be worn at all times. Sound amplification devices are highly recommended;
C. No day board, water-bearing, or food of any kind shall be provided by event staff or attendees to other attendees. All attendees must provide their own food and beverages;
D. While consuming food or beverages, attendees are required to remain stationary and follow social distancing rules;
E. No overnight camping shall be allowed;

H. All events shall require preregistration.
VII. Resolved, that the SCA Board of Directors mandates applicable Kingdoms who have determined that it is safe to host in-person events before June 1st, 2021 or who propose any deviation from the above restrictions to request a variance from the Society Seneschal in order to hold the proposed event. The Society Seneschal shall have the authority to grant or deny these requests. These requests will be reviewed by the Board using the same review method used for variances to Corpora;
VIII. Resolved, that small local gatherings including, but not limited to: guild meetings, officer meetings, and local martial activities including archery and thrown weapons shall remain at the discretion of the Crown and Kingdom Seneschal, in accordance with province, territory, state, and local health guidelines. Virtual events as alternatives continue to be a viable option;
IX. Resolved, that enforcement of this resolution will be handled by the Society Seneschal and President of SCA Inc.; and,
X. Resolved, that the SCA Board of Directors commends the hard-working officers, royalty, membership, and participants who have allowed the SCA to continue to flourish virtually as we lift this suspension and transition forward in a manner consistent with recommended health and safety standards.
The President and the Society Seneschal have been given the responsibility of implementing the resumption of events within the rules above and adjusting the strictures as needed with Board approval.
As per item (H) in the Resolution, SCA, Inc. has available the Event Module for the mandatory pre-registration process. All kingdoms are encouraged to utilize this tool. More information will be forthcoming from the SCA Accounting Specialist, Mazelle Attiya. If you would like to contact her about this available option, she can be reached at email@example.com.
This is our first step toward the resumption of SCA events. Working with the corporate officers and with input from the various kingdoms, we will continue to assess the pandemic environment and make changes going forward as needed, either to add further restrictions or relax existing ones as the situation allows.
No matter what safety precautions we put in place, there is no substitute for each individual being educated about the risk to themselves and their loved ones, and making responsible choices to protect themselves and others from this virus.
We look forward to seeing many of you, in person and in garb, as we prepare to begin in-person events again.
Greetings unto the populace of Æthelmearc,
Although unable to physically gather within Our Sylvan Lands at this time, We still wish to make an appearance wherever you may be. Kingdom E-Newsletters Available to All – December 1, 2020
During the October 2020 meeting, the Board of Directors voted unanimously in favor of the removal of the “paid members only” barrier from the sca.org e-newsletter online portal.
As of December 1, 2020, the paywall will be removed from newsletters, inter-kingdom directory and Board Minutes. This will give all participants and groups the opportunity to explore the rich and abundant history of the SCA. We are hoping these documents can be used as historical references and tools to help us grow the SCA community.
Subscribers to the paper copies of Kingdom newsletters will not be affected by this change. Your paper subscriptions will continue to be mailed to you in a timely manner.
