Welcome to our Kingdom!
A Missive from Their Royal Majesties of Æthelmearc:
While We have long enjoyed Our time serving as Monarchs of Glorious Æthelmearc, the Sylvan Line must continue! As is Our duty and honor, We would invite all comers to attend and participate in Our upcoming Our Crown Tournament to be held on August 21,
2021 in Our Shire of Misty Highlands.
It is Our greatest wish that all who are willing and able endeavor to participate, witness and be present for this most auspicious day in the history of Æthelmearc. The continuation of the Kingdom and succession of the Crown lay in your hands. The victor should be tested on the tournament field by every valiant and honorable combatant that Our skilled Kingdom has to offer. All combatants from novice to Knight are urged to take up arms. However, We ask that entrants consider that the Crown weighs heavier during these strange times and you consider what being royalty at this time may mean. We encourage you to reach out to us with any questionsyou may have in this regard.
In order to get back on track as a Kingdom, the preferred date for Coronation is September 25, 2021. Alternate dates may also include September 18 or October 1. This is a very quick turnaround time, and entrants should consider the following prior to Crown Tournament as Our Heirs will be required to advise Us of their preferred option on the day of their victory.
As restrictions remain in place and events are limited, Our Heirs may choose to have a virtual Coronation, at an event hosted locally or at another event scheduled on the dates above. Should none of these options be viable, Coronation will occur on the morning of
October Crown Tournament.
Letters of intent are due to Us by July 21, 2021. We will limit those requirements outside of Kingdom Law to the following:
o Prospective consorts must be present at the tournament.
o Each combatant and consort must display a banner during the grand procession.
o All modern armor and equipment must be covered. This includes modern sports equipment, company logos, bright colored or blatantly plastic armor, etc. These may be worn but concealed with a heraldic tabard, surcoat or similar covering. Modern footwear is acceptable if disguised or understated (e.g.. black or brown).
We would also request that combatant couples be announced by a herald for the grand procession when possible. Please also review the section of Kingdom law listing requirements included below. Contact us if you have any questions regarding any of these requirements. Again, be mindful that letters of intent must be postmarked or received by the Crown no later than 30 days prior to Crown Tournament (July 21, 2021). Confirmation of receipt will be provided as received. Please contact us via email if you have any concerns.
Our contact information:
TRM Maynard and Liadain
(Postal address available on TRM website or upon request)
Letters of intent must include the following elements for both entrants: SCA names, Legal names, Postal Addresses, Telephone numbers, E-mail addresses, Proofs of membership, Age (proof to be supplied at Crown Tournament) and Proof of current authorization for Combatants.
We would also request that the preferred titles of both fighter and consort are included in letters of intent to ensure accuracy and promote pageantry (ex. Lord, THLady, Baroness, Sir, Mistress, etc.). For your convenience, there is an online Letter of Intent Form available on the Kingdom Website: http://ae.scaforms.org/view.php?id=63921
We are so incredibly excited to see many of you soon and thank all those who are making this grand day possible.
For Honor, Glory and Æthelmearc,
Maynard and Liadain

Greetings my beloved Æthelmearc!
I am so delighted that Æthelmearc is reopening! I want to caution; however, this pandemic is not over. Hopefully, we are at the beginning of the end.
So – as many have seen, the Board of Directors have lifted some but not all requirements put in place, starting in July. Of note – Æthelmearc has some additional requirements. It is our plan to follow both the letter and intent of the BOD’s policies and CDC guidelines – as the Kingdom Seneschalate is somewhat risk averse. Of note – we must follow state and local laws and policies if they are stricter than the BOD’s or Æthelmearc’s rules.
Let’s go over the specifics:
As of July 1, 2021:
Masks: Many of us have had to go back to work and navigate to mask or not to mask. It is a tricky subject. We (Their Majesties, the Deputy Kingdom Seneschal for Pandemics, and myself) have made our decision on masks based on our risk calculus and what my own workplace is doing –
First and foremost, we want to navigate how we proceed with thoughtfulness and kindness. Therefore – we will not ask anyone’s vaccination status. This is also from the Board of Directors. (If you want to volunteer that information to others, that is up to you.) (Venues and homeowners can ask about vaccination status but that is on them to collect and verify.) We also should not ask anyone why they are wearing a mask – folks can have many reasons for wearing them, other than their vaccination status. Again, we want to be thoughtful and kind. Æthelmearc will also be following CDC guidelines – therefore – as of July 1, 2021 – if a participant in Æthelmearc is fully vaccinated, they do not have to wear a mask. at events, practices, or gatherings. This also means that if someone is not fully vaccinated, they do have to wear a mask (unless they are under two years old) at events, practices, and gatherings. Also – to clarify – if someone previously had COVID, but is not fully vaccinated, they must also wear a mask.
Everyone in Æthelmearc is on their honor to wear their masks if they are not vaccinated. We expect all of Æthelmearc to follow these guidelines as the SCA has always valued honesty, courtesy, honor, and chivalry.
Event size: We can have events of any size. Pre-registration is still required. (Any practice or gathering over 25 still needs pre-registration, otherwise a sign-in sheet is fine.) This is in part, per the Society Seneschal, to make sure we have a list of attendees in case local or state officials ask us for that information. The Webministry is working with branch Seneschals on developing easy online pre-registration forms and the Exchequer’s office is working
towards using the SCA’s online payment system, SCARS. Any SCARS questions, please contact The Honorable Noble Rhys at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Indoor events: Yes, events can be indoors.
Overnight events: Yes, you can have them.
Food: No feasts. The SCA cannot provide food served buffet style or family style. No branch sponsored pot lucks either. Individuals may do so at their own risk. Boxed lunches however are okay. Please contact me if you have other ideas for food at events and we can talk it out.
Water: Providing water in a large water cooler is okay — but everyone must use their own drinking container or the SCA can buy paper cups. No exceptions. No more water jugs with straws. The SCA and its branches can provide individual bottled water. We also recommend a recycling plan for those bottles.
Demos: We are still looking into demos right now and what that looks like for Æthelmearc. More information on that soon.
Reminder – all of this starts July 1st, 2021. Until then, the previous BOD guidelines apply.
Royal events – August Crown tourney is on and has no event size caps! Please see this month’s
announcement in the Æstel. Coronation will hopefully be in September- and will be determined by the Heirs. We will be putting in an official variance request for that event with the Society Seneschal but have already received a go ahead. October Crown details are still being worked on.
In January 2022 – we will be going back to our normal Kingdom Event Rotation. If your branch is interested in hosting a royal event, please check out that rotation on our website.
I know this has been a trying time for all of us but I am happy we are coming back together. I look forward to seeing you all soon.

The Society Seneschal shall have the authority to grant or deny these requests. These requests will be reviewed by the Board using the same review method used for variances to Corpora;
VIII. Resolved, that small local gatherings including, but not limited to: guild meetings, officer meetings, and local martial activities including archery and thrown weapons shall remain at the discretion of the Crown and Kingdom Seneschal, in accordance with province, territory, state, and local health guidelines. Virtual events as alternatives continue to be a viable option;
IX. Resolved, that enforcement of this resolution will be handled by the Society Seneschal and President of SCA Inc.; and,
X. Resolved, that the SCA Board of Directors commends the hard-working officers, royalty, membership, and participants who have allowed the SCA to continue to flourish virtually as we lift this suspension and transition forward in a manner consistent with recommended health and safety standards.
The President and the Society Seneschal have been given the responsibility of implementing the resumption of events within the rules above and adjusting the strictures as needed with Board approval.
As per item (H) in the Resolution, SCA, Inc. has available the Event Module for the mandatory pre-registration process. All kingdoms are encouraged to utilize this tool. More information will be forthcoming from the SCA Accounting Specialist, Mazelle Attiya. If you would like to contact her about this available option, she can be reached at email@example.com.
This is our first step toward the resumption of SCA events. Working with the corporate officers and with input from the various kingdoms, we will continue to assess the pandemic environment and make changes going forward as needed, either to add further restrictions or relax existing ones as the situation allows.
No matter what safety precautions we put in place, there is no substitute for each individual being educated about the risk to themselves and their loved ones, and making responsible choices to protect themselves and others from this virus.
We look forward to seeing many of you, in person and in garb, as we prepare to begin in-person events again.
Greetings unto the populace of Æthelmearc,
Although unable to physically gather within Our Sylvan Lands at this time, We still wish to make an appearance wherever you may be. Kingdom E-Newsletters Available to All – December 1, 2020
During the October 2020 meeting, the Board of Directors voted unanimously in favor of the removal of the “paid members only” barrier from the sca.org e-newsletter online portal.
As of December 1, 2020, the paywall will be removed from newsletters, inter-kingdom directory and Board Minutes. This will give all participants and groups the opportunity to explore the rich and abundant history of the SCA. We are hoping these documents can be used as historical references and tools to help us grow the SCA community.
Subscribers to the paper copies of Kingdom newsletters will not be affected by this change. Your paper subscriptions will continue to be mailed to you in a timely manner.
