Greetings from Illadore, Kingdom Seneschal.
This is a bit of a different letter than I usually send.
I have had a number of questions regarding the spreading coronavirus and the SCA. Please see the update from Corporate. I and the other Kingdom Seneschals are keeping our eyes on this virus and what it could mean to upcoming events.
What I can tell you is that we are in the very early stages of the spread of this disease and we do not know the outcome. However, you are best served by following common sense:
– Basic hygiene is your friend. Wash your hands regularly and for at least 20 seconds at a time. Don’t touch your face with unwashed hands.
– If you are sick, please stay home. No matter who you are: Seneschal, Autocrat, Royalty, Head Cook, etc – if you are sick, you are not doing yourself, your friends, or the Society any favors by attending an event. If anyone gives you guff, feel free to tell them Illadore told you so.
– Take extra precautions to keep surfaces clean. Clean your phone and your feast gear often.
– Consider bowing, curtsying, giving elbow bumps, a hat tip, a happy wave, or the Vulcan salute rather than giving hugs or shaking hands.
For more guidance on how to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in your community, check out the CDC website –
Here’s more local information:
I recommend autocrats have extra cleaning supplies and wash stations available at events. If an autocrat is unsure whether or not to have an event, please feel free to contact me. A good indicator of time to reconsider is whether or not local schools have closed. Listen to your local health officials.
Please take extra care of yourselves. Be reasonable. Be kind to each other. Preparation is key, not panic. If things change, we will let you know.
I hope to see you all soon (and healthy)
