Welcome to our Kingdom!

A Missive from Their Royal Majesties of Æthelmearc:

Unto all who read these words, do We, Maynard and Liadain, King and Queen of Glorious Æthelmearc, send greetings and warm wishes.

August would normally bring a call to War and a celebration of one of our greatest events, Pennsic. We, like you, long for the days when we may once again gather, but We take solace that our collective responsible actions now will dictate a better future for all.

These are difficult times, as more events are cancelled, and uncertainty continues to plague the lands. We applaud you for adapting and embracing the Virtual SCA and for finding new ways to connect and remain engaged. However, We also recognize things are simply not the same and the weight that carries. Please continue to be kind to one another and try to think the better, before the worst, of friends, family and fellow SCAdians. We are a passionate people and the current climate pushes emotions to run higher than ever – occasionally resulting in misunderstandings of intent.

We are so very proud of this Kingdom and the example you have provided. Please continue to be considerate, practicing patience, discretion, and tolerance. Try to celebrate joy, even the smallest sparks of light, rather than dwelling on negative. We know this can be a challenge, but also know you are up to the task and We are here to support you in whatever way We can. We are stronger together!

While the future is unknown, We continue to be hopeful and shall continue to do what We can to promote a positive SCA experience. Please continue to join Us for ÆLive and also check out: #AERoamingRoyals (information included lower on this page). We would love to have some adventures with you!

A Royal Missive with Regard to Pennsic:

Noble populace, after much deliberation and consideration, Pennsic 49 will be postponed until 2021. We understand that this is disappointing and upsetting on many levels, for many reasons, however We fully support this decision.

The health and safety of our community, including the staff and hosts of this epic event, are of utmost importance. Please join us applauding the Pennsic Mayor, his staff and Kingdom Seneschals who were tasked to make this difficult call. Know that the horns of War will be heard again – this is but a delay. We will look to the future and will celebrate all that we continue to overcome.

For Honor, Glory and Æthelmearc,

Maynard and Liadain
Rex et Regina

From the Kingdom Seneschal, Mistress Illadore:

Greetings my beloved Æthelmearc from your Kingdom Seneschal –

I have some good news – Duke Sir Christopher Rawlins, mka Dr. Chadd Nesbitt, is once again a Deputy Kingdom Seneschal. In particular, he is my Deputy Kingdom Seneschal for Pandemics. For any Seneschals or Marshals with questions regarding Æthelmearc and COVID-19, please do not hesitate to contact him at pandemic@aethelmearc.org. His Grace is happy to assist with any questions regarding how to stay safe in the SCA at this time.

On that note, please continue to be diligent and prudent regarding SCA gatherings and practices. Please pay attention to what is going on locally and in your area when deciding on whether or not to have a gathering. I highly recommend that if you are going to have an activity, that it be a small outdoor activity (where you’re not breathing on each other) and diligently wearing masks, covering both mouth and nose. Some areas in our Kingdom have unfortunately seen a rise in positive tests and cases, so it is prudent that we scale back our activities in those areas. Again, we should think about getting back to SCA activities as a dial that we can turn up and down, not an on/off switch. We absolutely do not want SCA events to become super spreader events.

Finally, I am still so excited for all of the e-SCA classes and events we have been having online. I know that many feel overwhelmed about trying to keep up with all that’s going online – please don’t be. Most classes and events are being recorded for posterity and you can look at them (or not) when you feel up to it.

Hope you all are well and I hope to see you all soon,

Resolution to Suspend In-Person SCA Activity until January 31st, 2021:

During the July 28, 2020, Ad Hoc meeting of the Board of Directors for the Society for Creative Anachronism, the following Resolution was passed by a unanimous vote and made effective immediately:

Resolution to Suspend In-Person SCA Activity until January 31st, 2021(PDF)

I. Whereas, the COVID-19 Global Pandemic has created an unparalleled challenge for the administration of the Society for Creative Anachronism. The Board of Directors acknowledges the health and well-being of the membership and participants of the SCA are of utmost importance;

II. Whereas, the Crowns of the vast majority of North American Kingdoms have petitioned the board to suspend in-person SCA events in North America until January 31st, 2021;

III. Whereas, following consultation with the Kingdom Seneschals of the North American Kingdoms, it appears that this petition is generally supported;

IV. Therefore Now Be It Resolved, The SCA Board of Directors suspends all SCA in-person events in North America until January 31st, 2021;

V. Resolved, Small local gatherings including, but not limited to, archery practice, guild meetings, officer meetings, and local martial activities shall remain at the discretion of the Crown and Kingdom Seneschal, in accordance with CDC, State, Provincial, and local health guidelines and
recommendations. Virtual events as alternatives continue to be a viable option;

VI. Resolved, The SCA Board of Directors directs the Society Seneschal to grant a blanket variance to Corpora waiving any required events such as Crown List and Coronation until January 31st, 2021, as well as extending all current reigns until a royal list can be held to determine suitable Heirs;

VII. Resolved, If a Crown or Coronet steps down without Heirs for a Kingdom or Principality, a Regent shall be installed until such time as a royal list may be held to find suitable Heirs and a Coronation or Investiture held. This regent should be installed according to the Kingdom or Principality laws that govern the appointment of Regents, after consultation with the Society Seneschal. If the Kingdom or Principality has no such law, the Kingdom Seneschal (and Principality Seneschal when appropriate) must consult with the Society Seneschal and Society President to determine an appropriate selection method for a Regent;

VIII. Resolved, the SCA Board of Directors invites Kingdoms who have determined that it is safe to host in-person events before January 31st, 2021, to request a variance from the Society Seneschal to be able to do so. The Society Seneschal shall have the authority to grant or deny these requests. These requests will be reviewed by the Board using the same review method used for variances to Corpora;

IX. Resolved, the SCA Board of Directors commends the officers, royalty, hard-working membership, and participants who have made it possible for the SCA to continue activities during these trying times.

From the Kingdom Seneschal with Regard to Fighting and Fencing:

Greetings from from Your Kingdom Seneschal,

After consultation with Their Royal Majesties, the Deputy Kingdom Seneschal for Pandemics, and the Kingdom Earl Marshall, we are halting all fencing and heavy fighting (and any variant thereof) in AEthelmearc until August 30, 2020. This decision will be reviewed at that time (or possibly before) and if Their Majesties, the Kingdom Seneschal, the Deputy Kingdom Seneschal, and the Kingdom Earl Marshall agree, we will re-open fighting in AEthelmearc.

Obviously, this is not what we were hoping for. Sadly, our numbers and positivity rates across all three states (and across the U.S.) are going up. And the most important thing is that we keep our members safe.

Stay safe.
